Teaching Statement
Students learn in a variety of ways, that’s why I feel that it is important for a teacher to be able to identify learning styles of individual students early in their relationship. An excellent instructor should incorporate different methods of instruction to be efficient in meeting all needs of the students. For the performing arts most students are visual and kinesthetic learning. My method of teaching incorporates visual demonstration, verbal analysis of movement and the relationship through space. I encourage students to use each other as learning tools by working in groups and with partners. I also believe it is important for students to be able to ask questions in a way to verbally comprehend the material. I work to create a positive learning environment by treating all students equally and by providing positive feedback to everyone. Through my experience I have found that by challenging students to use critical thinking skills they retain the material more accurately.
It’s my goal to see development through performance, assessment and comprehension. I also believe that it is important for students to hear proper vocabulary as often as possible and as much as possible. As an educator I often use imagery to enhance the movement and believe that it enables students to use their imagination and creativity to perform. Understanding the history of the technique and being able to incorporate history into class is a great way for student to appreciate where the art form originated and where it is today. I strive to provide students with the best possible education by being actively engaged in the newest techniques and knowledge of the art form i am teaching as well as incorporating multiple teaching methods in the classroom.
