"The Starving Artist"
Los Angeles is known as the entertainment capital of the world, however New York City is home to a much longer majority of the worlds artists, covering all forms of art from music; fashion, theater, dance, make up artists, clothing designers and drag queens. This is what makes New York, New York the city of the "Starving Artist." Not only do artist's face the challenges of the Industry but we also face the economic hardships of the economy. I have found that through my struggles, disappointments and set backs being a "Starving Artist" is actually exhilarating. It reminds me that I am human. That the emotions I feel while acting or dancing come from the dark places that are created during these hard times (this is our substance). We as "entertainers" put ourselves in these positions. We have to, In order to feel what is real. I have often told myself I would rather be broke and living in New York City then to be rich and living back in my home town Pennsylvania. I choose art over luxury everyday. Sure the struggle is hard and of course life is much easier when you give in. However, giving in has never lead to great art. Artists choose this path in order to pursue our art and to make our art greater. We know what it takes. Starving for the cause of art isn't really starving, its sacrificing. Sacrificing opportunities, jobs, love, friendships and life to pursue our dreams to push ourselves further then we thought imaginable. We may be living off of one dollar pizza or not knowing who's couch we will crash on next but the "sacrificing artist" has everything they need to create a beautiful piece of art that will generation emotion and thought into another human. And that, is what makes our talent a gift. Next time you see a musician on the street singing for some spare change, stop and listen ... that sound is the sound of the "Sacrificing Artist". A sound that cannot be produced in any Hollywood recording studio.
